We have quite a variety of animals here at the park and we are always exploring new and fun adventures with them. We started out with chickens, aquiring the most beautiful and rare of all poultry. Most of our chickens can be seen free roaming, chasing bugs through the fields and basking in the sun.
We also raise heritage breed turkeys, America's original beautiful birds. They run around in a massive pack from April through November (three times the lifespan of most grocery store birds) and have been known to wade through the cool creek water on a hot summer day. Their meat is full bodied and flavorful, with plenty of dark meat and a gourmet taste praised by the Slow Foods movement. We're proud to offer heritage breed turkeys for Thanksgiving 2009.
Happily grazing out in our fields when you drive by, you'll see our fainting goats and Jacob sheep. We're hoping for some good wool from our sheep along with some goatsmilk in the future.
We also have pigs in the summertime that play where the beach house / old mill foundation still stands. I had no idea how much personality pigs have and they are quite a treat as they chase cars as they pull in to the park. We offer pork products in the fall and will have slow smoked, humanely raised sausage, ham, and bacon for sale. Email janeehouston@gmail.com to be put on the notification list!
Our projects for 2009 continue as we hope to have a successful hatch of emu, continuing to train our herd dog Pepper and welcoming baby lambs from our Jacob sheep in the spring.
